Six-Figure Journalism Jobs for the Week Ending November 1

Welcome to this week’s Six-Figure Journalism list! Rates for freelance work are up to $1.50 per word, and $312,000 per year! Companies include The New York Times, Apple, Microsoft, Wall Street Journal, McAfee, Huffington Post, Thrillist, Climate Home News and more. Jobs are remote or hybrid, and pay a minimum living wage!

Last week’s job list was gangbusters, this week is a bit lackluster, and the Dishonorable Mentions are at an all-time high. Such is the nature of media, particularly as we head into one of the most difficult and stressful weeks in recent memory.  In order to access the list you’ll need to become a paid subscriber. The cost is just $5 per month and I send out these emails every single Wednesday at 9am PT with brand new listings, contact information for editors, pay rates, and publication pitch guides.

I’m sure you’ve seen the controversy and blowback from the Washington Post’s decision not to endorse this week, and the resulting cancelation of more than 200,000 subscriptions. While that only represents around 8% of WaPo’s subscribers, it will have a deep impact on the newsroom and freelance budget there. There were quite a number of journalists who quit over Bezos’ shady move, so expect some new jobs to pop up there as they try to backfill the skilled folks they lost. Proceed at your own risk. Bezos isn’t known for giving two 💩s about journalism, and he continues to demonstrate that fact. Right along with the billionaire owner of the LA Times

Along those lines, if you haven’t voted early (I just dropped off my mail-in ballot!), make sure you have a plan to vote. Election day is less than a week away, and democracy as we know it hangs in the balance. It matters, deeply so ensure that your voice is heard. Like everyone else, I’ll be hunkered down next week just watching results come in. I know a lot of you have a lot of existential dread about this election, and just want you to know you’re definitely not alone. The results could potentially upend journalism as we know it and put a lot of us on the hit list, (including me), because of good, solid, truthful reporting we’ve done in our careers. It all feels particularly tenuous right now, and in total transparency, I waiver between being frozen with anxiety and fear, and thinking that it’s all going to work out.

As a journalist who has covered a lot of gnarly things in her career, I will say, that this too will pass. Hard news teaches you that there’s really no end to just how horrible human beings can be, but it also teaches you how to set boundaries and ensure that you are taking care of your own mental and physical health as much as possible in difficult times.

Even though the world feels precarious right now, I’m going to offer a little solace. In case you don’t already know, I happen to be a 500-hour certified yoga teacher and I teach yoga online three times per week.  I’m going to put together a quick video meditation for those of us in media who are feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, and just plain panicked. I’ll share it in next week’s newsletter and hope that it helps.

In the meantime, keep your heads up, and don’t fall for any of the inflammatory, fear-mongering bullshit that’s going around, especially on social media. Use your fact-checking skills, don’t fall for the bait, and don’t share misinformation or disinformation. It will get worse before it gets better for the time being. We’ve got a marathon ahead of us, and the future of democracy is at stake. Do your best, and GO VOTE.
