Welcome to this week’s journalism jobs list.
I am 100% positive you haven’t read my latest piece on ghost jobs over at The Observer, but I highly recommend it. It’s my second of two, and I’m continuing to push on the topic. I suspect that it may make you feel a lot better about what’s going on in the business, and why you’re getting ZERO responses from everyone you connect with on a jobs board.
More importantly, I wanted to share that even though I literally cover this stuff all the time, for a living, I myself, fell for another ghost job last week. You’ll have to become a subscriber to find out the details about that gig, but I thought I’d share just to show that you’re not alone. Employers are playing a lot of games, and its made finding a job–whether its freelance or full-time really difficult.
Along those lines, I finally decided to rip the damn bandaid off (yes, this is a pep talk) and start laying the groundwork for a podcast on freelancing. See? This is proof of my first step.
So: if you’re an editor who assigns stories or really wants to tell freelancers to stop doing this one super annoying thing, please reach out. I’d love to interview you for the show.
I would also love to hear from those of you who are freelancers who want to tell your own stories of wins, losses, and everything in between. I’ve got one great guest booked next week and have some ideas for who I’d like to have on the upcoming shows, but if you’d like to be a part of this, please don’t be shy. We have to support each other in these weird days and this is one way we can do it.
Finally, on to the jobs listings in this week’s newsletter. While I don’t post articles to this blog every week, I do send the newsletter out with brand new jobs each week.
This week is robust on the freelance front, though most of the full-time work is tied to a physical location. Everyone from National Geographic, Marie Claire, Benzinga, CNET, REI, American Express, NVIDIA and more are looking for people and pitches. Pay ranges from $1 per word to $365k per year. I include editor emails, and direct links to apply. Most of the jobs on the list are fully remote, too.
You’ll have to become a paid subscriber to unlock more details about these jobs and gigs. For $5 per month I do the legwork for you to make sure that you’re not spinning your wheels applying for ghost jobs, or worse, low-paying jobs.
You can find out more here and pay to subscribe. I manually send the newsletter each week, so once your payment comes through, I’ll send you the latest version as soon as possible. The newsletter will hit paid subscriber’s inboxes tomorrow morning at 9 am PT.
